Easy Coffee Replacement with Chicory Root

One of the most common questions I get asked is, what is a good non-caffeinated coffee replacement? So many of us are addicted to coffee, and not just for the caffeine, but the comfort of a warm cup of deliciousness to help us get through the day. So, I put together a nice little replacement blend for you.

CoffTea is a new blend that can be made either like a regular old cup of tea or ground and put in a coffee machine, drip set up, or French press. It starts with a base of roasted chicory root and accented with a little roasted dandelion.

Roasted chicory root has been used for centuries as food and medicine, but more recently as a coffee replacement due to its similar flavor and accessibility. Chicory is one of those plants that grows easily in all kinds of conditions, but it loves roadsides, ditches, and field edges. It’s easily identified by its woody stem and beautiful blue flowers.

It’s important to note that chicory root does not taste exactly like coffee but is the most accessible naturally non-caffeinated replacement I have come across. It has a similar flavor, with a strong bitter note and just a little more nutty. I added the dandelion root to bring another dimension to the blend and smooth it out as dandelion root has a bitter coffee-esque flavor as well.

Health Benefits of Chicory Root

Chicory is a liver-support herb, and its bitter flavor can help promote digestion, detoxification, and more. It’s often touted as an herb for weight loss, and some studies have even shown a correlation between its use and the reduction in hormones that make you feel hungry.

In addition to its liver support chicory is high in vitamins, and minerals like calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin C, potassium, and even antioxidants. It’s also high in inulin, a prebiotic fiber that not only supports digestion but helps with waste removal.

Medicinally chicory has been used for loss of appetite, upset stomach, constipation, gallbladder disorders, cancer, and rapid heartbeat. It has also been used as a bitter to help promote digestive support, specifically for heart burn, indigestion, and upset stomach.

Is Chicory Root CoffTea good for everyone?

While chicory root does not have any specific contraindications it has been known to cause gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea in some, due to its high fiber content. Those with liver or gallbladder issues may want to consult their physician prior to regular use. It is also not suggested for those who are pregnant or nursing.

Can I add CoffTea to my Regular Coffee?

Absolutely! As many people work to cut down on their caffeine consumption, swapping out a little bit of your regular coffee with CoffTea is a great option. I would start with a 3:1 ratio and add more to alter the flavor as you please. Because this product is in granules it may be necessary to grind it before running it through your machine, but again this depends on your system and flavor preferences.
